Title: Another Grandfathers Krag Thread
Post by h8pvmnt on Dec 27th, 2016 at 4:45pm
I inherited a sporterized 1898 Krag Rifle from my Grandmother probably 20 years ago. It had belonged to my Grandfather who passed in the early 70s. He used it on many successful deer and Elk hunts in Utah throughout the time he had it. My grandmother is still alive at 94, but she does not recall much of the rifles history.  I never really investigated how he came to own it or how long he had it. I am trying to find out more of those details. Apparently my Great Grandfather also had a Krag that was heavily sporterized. My father ended up with that but it somehow got away so its gone. The theory is that both Krags may have been purchased at the same time somewhere in the 1930's but that is just a hypothesis. I always wanted to restore this rifle to its Military configuration but i never looked into what that would take until now. So i will post pictures of how it was as it came to me, and what progress i have made in the restoration. I am down to basically a couple of screws and it will be 100% back to military configuration. Thankfully the barrel and receiver were never modified so my task was to find an original stock, hand-guard, upper band and replace missing or damaged components. The middle band screw was completely buggered to the point i could not get it out, so i replaced the entire middle band as well. The sights that were on the rifle were modified a bit or just plain damaged. They would not fit the original hand-guard i found so i found a 1901 sight that would fit the hand-guard. I will keep my eye out for an original hand-guard that fits the 1902 sight. But for now i am happy with the results. Pictures to follow.
