That came out very nice, the stock looks great. I am just finishing up a restoration of my Grandfathers 1898 Rifle but i am not going to attempt to re-finish it anymore than it has already been done before i got it. Great job.

What stains or finishes did you use to get the stock addition to match so close?  Just purchased a forearm for a restoration project.  THANKS

The process was:
chemical stripper
whitening
steaming out the dents
fit and contour repair section (used a small section of 1/4" threaded steel rod in place of a dowel, however, it made fitting the band crosspin difficult. Required splitting the pin and fitting it, although had i planned better the screw wouldnt have been an issue)
stain with minwax red oak and dark walnut (For the stain i first wiped a light coat of mineral spirits onto the stock to make sure it didnt absorb too quickly, then adding more coats of either the dark or red until the color was close.)
finally coat with boiled linseed oil, with light sandings using scotchbrite between coats to knock down hairs.

I would suggest Joe Farmers book oin the Krags and read what he says about the original finish on the stocks. You will find it most interesting!

who did the finish on the metal?

I did. the small parts are all niter blued in stump remover + 10% manganese dioxide (should have bought the brownells stuff, melts at a lower temp)

butt plate was rust blued with mark lee express blue #1

butt plate was sanded and polished to 300 grain

the rest was sanded to remove pits then polished to a mirror polish.
