'tda' - Welcome to the KCA Forum.

Your grandfather's Krag, #18262, started life as a U.S. model 1892 rifle, assembled around July, 1895, at Springfield Armory. The original barrel would have been 30 inches long.

Over the years it has become a mixture of parts. Either someone has shortened the original barrel or someone has put a carbine barrel on it. A clearer photo of the front-sight base and its attachment to the barrel would clarify this question.

The Stock appears to be a shortened model 1896 rifle stock and the rear-sight is a model 1896 sight.

Most of the model 1892 rifles were rebuilt and updated between 1897 to 1902. This Krag may have undergone such alteration, but, that would not explain the shortened barrel. (The barrel alteration happened in Civilian hands).

Great Family Heirloom!

thanks for the reply, i have always wondered about the guns history. I can get a picture of the front sight if it will provide some more info.

I have a few of them cut down like yours.  I've found them very accurate.

have shot mine only a few times, winchester 180gr ptsp. 4" high at 50yds, 4" high at 100yds. hits the 8"steel plate at 150 everytime.

Hmmmmm.  I don't know.  It does not look like the barrel has been cut back.  Could you be so kind as to drop a cleaning rod down the barrel on a closed bolt and mark the rod at the muzzle.  As mentioned above it should be 30 inches.

Good shooting.

'tda' - Your picture does not show front-sight with enough clarity.

You may have a barrel that was once for a carbine. (Your action is from a model 1892 rifle).

Attached picture by 'Parashooter' shows detail of how the Armory mounted Krag front-sight base.

IMHO - a lot better than usual, but, not Springfield crown and dovetail.

That's an interesting bit of work. Had it been brazed and finished flush instead of "staked", it might be indistinguishable from original.

Ok.  It is a cut down barrel.  The original picture threw me off.  I wonder if the sight was removed from the barrel stub by taking a chunk of the barrel to be the dovetail without unbrazing the sight first.

thanks for the input folks, really enjoying learning about this gun. unfortunately my father and grandfather were gone before i had sense enough to learn what they knew about this Krag. Is it safe to say that this is a fairly well done mongrel? someday I will pass this gun along and would like to provide an accurate story. Thanks again for helping with this.

It is a useful Krag for 'Hunting' with a mixture of parts from different vintages. Springfield updated a lot of model 1892 rifles in the early 1900s.

It is likely one of these rifles that got 'Sportered'. The barrel was shortened to a non-standard 24 inches and the original front-sight nicely reused and repositioned.
