'tda' - Welcome to the KCA Forum.
Your grandfather's Krag, #18262, started life as a U.S. model 1892 rifle, assembled around July, 1895, at Springfield Armory. The original barrel would have been 30 inches long. Over the years it has become a mixture of parts. Either someone has shortened the original barrel or someone has put a carbine barrel on it. A clearer photo of the front-sight base and its attachment to the barrel would clarify this question. The Stock appears to be a shortened model 1896 rifle stock and the rear-sight is a model 1896 sight. Most of the model 1892 rifles were rebuilt and updated between 1897 to 1902. This Krag may have undergone such alteration, but, that would not explain the shortened barrel. (The barrel alteration happened in Civilian hands). Great Family Heirloom! |
