Your Krag, #4934, is a model 1892 rifle. It would have been built around August-September, 1894. Model 1892 Krags were built in 1894 and 1895.
Later Krag actions had manufacturing changes and were marked 1896, model 1896, model 1898, and model 1899-(made as carbines). The first carbines (except for two model 1892 prototypes specimens) were model 1896 carbines. Manufacture started in 1895. These carbines may be marked 1895, 1896, or model 1896. Note - Although adopted by the U.S. in 1892, Springfield Armory did not begin manufacture of the Krag until 1894. (1894 is a manufacture year, not a model number). Is your barrel still the full 30 inch length? A lot of the model 1892 and model 1896 Krags were updated in the early 1900's. It would be interesting to see if your Krag has its 'early' parts and if your receiver avoided being 'notched' for the 'bolt hold-open pin' introduced on later extractors. |
