Title: Making the best of Bubba.
Post by butlersrangers on Feb 16th, 2018 at 9:12pm
Here are a couple of cut-down Krags made up of 'Bubbaed' Stocks and some good parts.

No Krags were harmed by me. (I am guilty of altering a '98 cut-down stock to take the '96 action. The stock was not a candidate for stretching).

The top Krag is one of my favorite guns to shoot. The bottom 1896 is a recent arrival waiting for a trip to the Range.

I like shooting 'iron sights', while my eyes allow it. But, I sure would consider a 'Krag Haus' mount and Scout Scope, if Hunting or eye-sight required it.

A nice pair of Krags but I'm curious about the stamped handguard barrel band on the lower one. In my mind I've always associated stamped military rifle parts with WW2's more economical wartime production. Prior to WW2 things were machined from castings or chunks of steel, right? Or am I full of it?

'Baltimoreed' - Actually, the barrel-band you are asking about is for the 1903 Springfield. It was made before WW2, but, a Bubba 're-purposed' it.

I tidied it up a bit, because it had been mutilated and used on a different Krag cut-down rifle.

It was in my junk box.  I have tried to fit it to the Krag barrel contour and make it look sort of like the barrel-band used on 1903 Sporters and .22s. It is a stopgap solution until I come up with a better idea.

You are correct. WW2 1903-A3 Rifles, made by Remington and Smith-Corona, had simple barrel-bands made from stampings.

Nice job BR. I would be happy with that pair myself... :)

I might have one in my Krag parts box if you're interested.

'Baltimoreed' - I do have a spare Krag rifle barrel-band. It would just be a matter of fitting it.

Whatever I do will be improvised with this stock. Too much of the forearm was cut off. I can use it 'as is' and wait for inspiration.

Thanks!

Let me know when you're heading to the range with them Chuck...  I might be interested if meeting you to pop off a few rounds myself!
