I believe the threaded end of the rod screwed into a small steel plate (ram rod stop) that was inletted into a hole in the stock in the action area.
(Does Joe Farmer's book cover this kind of stuff) ? Attached photos of a 'bubba-ed' early rifle stock: (note lack of lightening cuts in barrel channel). rod-stop-1ed.jpg ( 66 KB | 0

There is a 1892 Krag Rifle on Gunbroker that appears to have most of its early features. LOTS of pictures of the stock on the inside including the steel plate mentioned below and the ramrod channel. Does the channel appear to be original?

I can't find that particular one without going through 31 pages of "krag" items.

Looks pretty original to me. In one of the photos from above, it appears the barrel channel may have been free floated at one time, like one of my 92/96 rifles has been. The front blade appears high for the 92 sight, but maybe someone liked a sight pic like I use.

Mark: I happened to be looking at some reprinted U.S. Ordnance Manuals last night.
The reprint of "Rules For The Management .... ", printed in 1894, illustrates well, some of the features, of the U.S. Magazine Rifle, Model 1892. These reprints are available on ebay sometimes for under $10. mark-1.JPG ( 47 KB | 0
