Not a '98 carbine, front sight is not original (looks like a Springfield 1903 sight) stock is definitely a shortened rifle stock ( the small pin in front of the forward barrel band, would be a retaining spring clip on a carbine). Not a bad looking sporterized '98, only collector interest would be in individual parts.

If it is safe, shoot it and enjoy it.
