goodwood:  As Dick Hosmer reported, you must be reading a "3" as an "8" at the begining of your serial number.  #349,589 would have been produced in October 1901 per Joe Poyer's book.  Highest U.S. Krag numbers were probably around 474,xxx, with production ending around November 1903. An 1899 marked receiver should be a Carbine.
