Title: Grandpas Krag Post by supermav on Feb 20th, 2012 at 1:14am
Hi , I am new to the forum. I recently was given a 1899 Krag #341819. The story as I know it is that the gun was passed from great grandpa to grandpa to my dad who traded it to my cousin for a horse in the late 70s.Then in 2011 my cousin was cleaning out his moms house after she passed away and gave it back to me as he had no use for it.I know it is not all that rare but i would like to find out what it is that i have. I have no intention of selling it just to find out more about what it is missing or needs Thanks Todd

Hi Todd... and welcome to the wonderful world of Krags!
Looks like you have a cut down sporter there. To correctly measure the barrel, drop a cleaning rod down the muzzle with the bolt closed. Mark it and then measure the length of the rod. It looks like you might be at 24 inches (the length of my sporter too). I would be interested in seeing pictures of the rear sight, and the rest of the Krag overall. Paul |

The front looks factory

Your front sight is not factory... It appears that the barrel is machine down for some reason in the area where the front sight is located.
I've attached a picture of an actual Krag sight post... This is on my sporter. |

I believe the odd looking front end is the remains of a 1903 barrel - very common gunsmith swap back in the day.

What is the best way to take care of the gun as far as cleaning and taking care of the rust?
