Title: My 'Faux' NRA carbine and some W-748 loads Post by butlersrangers on Jun 11th, 2013 at 11:13pm
This is a parts gun that I put together in the spirit of the "NRA" carbines once put together at Benicia arsenal to improve civilian sales. This is actually an 1899 Carbine receiver that someone re-barreled with a Krag rifle barrel (It is 22&1/4 inches long). The barreled-action was painted black with stove paint and in a sadly altered carbine stock, when I bought it. It has a mystery banded front sight that holds a Marble's blade (I think the band sight is off a Model 30 Remington). The bore is fine and the shiniest I have. I bought it for a Shooter. I took it to the range today transplanted in a cut-down rifle stock. I was emboldened, by some information recently shared by Parashooter, to try some re-loads using W-748 (I have 8 lbs. of it). I used some 147 gr. military projectiles and some Sierra Match Kings I had laying around. Cartridge O.A.L. was 3.087 and the Spitzers fed smoothly. Accuracy at 50 yards was promising, giving 1&1/4" and 1&1/2" groups.
