Title: srs please!
Post by Todd Doyka on Mar 9th, 2015 at 8:45pm
before my grandpap died, he gave me his 1898 springfield armory in 30-40 krag. i know that this has been bubbized. but they did a nice job! the barrel is 22" along with a 1903 sight. the rear sight has a buck horn where the flip up peep sight is. i got s&s  to send me a real flip up peep sights and a screw. the stock has been replace by a herter's in the late '50's or early '60s. i'm not sure if my pap had the gun when his father was alive or if he got it after that. my dad took quite a few deer with it during his younger days. it sat  for about 25 years before i got it. it took me about 5 days, 5-7 hours just to clean the bore. it looks shiny and new. i slugged the bore and it came to .3085". i plan on shooting it with 165gr ranch dogs  (.311") and a choice of either h4198 or varget. open sights out to around 100 or so yards, them deer don't know what hit them!!!

anyway, the serial # is 445630. please check the number and any info will be greatly appericted!

Todd:  Welcome to the KCA Forum!  Your Family Heirloom Krag, #445630, was probably assembled around April, 1903.

The closest numbers in Frank Mallory's "The Krag Rifle Story", 2nd. edition, Appendix list, are #445615 (1898 Rifle - documented 01/22/1907 in Frankford Arsenal ammo test) and #446062 (1898 Rifle - recorded 04/08/1910 on USS Kansas - "blew up").

Only a very small percentage of actual Krag serial numbers have been recorded and found in researched documents.

its a shame that more serial # can't be found.

do you know if the krag had a 30" barrel? my dad and i were talking and i said it was cut and he said it a carbine so it was cut.

Your Krag, with that high serial number, was built as a Model 1898 Rifle with a 30 inch barrel.  Someone shortened the barrel and put on a 1903 Springfield front-sight.
