Title: inherited hunting rifle ?
Post by BakersKrag on Mar 15th, 2015 at 2:04am
dont shoot much.  inherited this hunting rifle.  looks to be a Krag action, but does it shoot a 30-40 Krag cartridge? (see photo)  cant find any marks on the action or barrel or any serial numbers.
thanks in advance for any comments

'BakersKrag':  Welcome to the KCA Forum.  Your rifle is a U.S. Model 1896 Krag.    The markings, "U.S. Model 1896, Springfield Armory, and serial number" are now hidden by the Weaver scope-mount.  If you remove the mount, you will see what remains, but, these markings are probably damaged by the 'aftermarket' scope-mount screw holes.

It is most likely that your Krag is still chambered for the .30-40 Krag cartridge.  The caliber was not marked on U.S. Service Rifles.  You normally only see cartridge/caliber markings on arms that were rebarreled or rechambered for a non-issue cartridge.

(photo showing nature of markings probably hidden by your scope mount).

Exactly right.  After a fight, pulled the scope, (there is always one screw that doesn't want to come out) and the markings were there as you indicated.
got 1 box of ammo ($$ ouch) and will head to the range at the next opportunity.  looking forward to pulling the trigger.
thanks
t.

+1 on what Tom said.  The first time I fired my first sporter, I was hooked!  I've been a Krag Nut ever since... at least 30+ years now!!!

Is the scope offset enough that you can get the safety vertical?  If not, you should get a low scope safety, they come up on ebay from time to time.
