'BakersKrag':  Welcome to the KCA Forum.  Your rifle is a U.S. Model 1896 Krag.    The markings, "U.S. Model 1896, Springfield Armory, and serial number" are now hidden by the Weaver scope-mount.  If you remove the mount, you will see what remains, but, these markings are probably damaged by the 'aftermarket' scope-mount screw holes.

It is most likely that your Krag is still chambered for the .30-40 Krag cartridge.  The caliber was not marked on U.S. Service Rifles.  You normally only see cartridge/caliber markings on arms that were rebarreled or rechambered for a non-issue cartridge.

(photo showing nature of markings probably hidden by your scope mount).
