Title: Camp Perry 2015
Post by psteinmayer on Jul 1st, 2015 at 10:53am
Ok, for anyone who is shooting Vintage with their Krags on the Viale Range morning relay on Sunday (July 19th), lets have a show of force and take San Juan - er, Camp Perry by storm. Squad with Madsenshooter and I. We'll meet up at the Viale Range gate at 5:30 AM, and then proceed together up range to the check in to Squad together!

Remember the Maine!

Paul

Remember THE Maine... as we advance on San Juan Hill (or the Viale Range target line) with our trusty Krags at the ready!

As we near the 2015 National Vintage Match, I want to wish everyone shooting the best of luck!  Let's show the rest what a well trained soldier and his trusty Krag can do...

For anyone shooting Vintage on the Viale Range that's interested, Madsenshooter and I would love to squad with anyone who wants to shoot along side us.  We'll muster at the Viale Range gate at 5:30 AM on Sunday Morning.

The match was great.  Several Krag shooters were there, although Bob Wolfe and I only found a couple of them.  I shot an 86-1X prone, 76-0X rapid, and 58-0X off-hand for a total of 220-1X.  Not nearly in medal contention, I still had a great time.

Now I'm looking forward to next year!  ;D

Awesome. I would sure like to do that one of these days. Maybe I can get tuned up for next year.

Glad you guys had a good experience.

What distance were yours scores shot at?

200 yds.  I shot a 228-1.  Highest Krag shooter listed shot a 262-4.  Winner of the match shot a 289-6 using a 1917.

Nice Madsen, you and Paul certainly shot respectable scores using 110+ year old rifles. Congrats to both of you.  Are you both shooting hand loads developed for each of your rifles?

Yes, Paul uses 220grs bullets with 40gr 4350.  I was shooting Nosler 168s, at 2200fps or so with a powder that burns about 4198 speed.  The 168s have shown in long range shooting that they go through a bit of instability when transitioning down from Mach 2.  They'd have gone through that same barrier before 200yds at the speed I started them out.  I needed to get at least 2350fps to avoid that transition, and that would have required a slightly slower burning powder, which I didn't have at the time.  The load was super at 100yds, so I'm going to blame the transition.  I shot my usual sharpshooter level scores with the Garand, which takes some of the blame off my worm-eaten eyes.

Awesome Paul.  Must be a challenge to concentrate on your job of sighting and trigger squeeze when there is a war going on around you.

Thanks for the video very much !

Zg,  if you're interested in shooting Vintage next year at Camp Perry, Bob and I will certainly be happy to help you get started.  It's tons of good fun and you usually meet the nicest people there.  If you're close to me (Michigan), you could even come to a local match with me and shoot there first to learn what it's all about.  I shoot in a match at Kalamazoo every month (usually the last Saturday of every month).  I'd be happy to shoot with you... And anyone else who cares to join me!

Awesome Paul, thanks for the invite. Might be a challenge as I am in MA, but where there is a will there is a way. I will let you know if it may be possible.
