A friend showed me a recent inheritance that appears to be in fair shape, but I don't know much about it. It is a Springfield s/n in the mid 200,000's. The cartouch is clear, I think it was 1900. The rear sight has marking to about 2,ooo yards and has a very small peep that can be rotated up to align with the notch. What is special is that there is a pistol grip section of about 10-12"that has been inlaid to the stock and the entire rear portion (about 4") of the stock appears to have been spliced in. It still has the metal buttplate.
Were these modifications common? Do they affect the value? And what would be an approximate value of a rifle like this?

No, these modifications are not common and are not armory work. If you want to e-mail me some photos, I could give you a better idea a estimated value, or you could post some photos on the forum to get input.

'Jake' - Your Krag appears to be all 'cut-down' model 1898 parts.

I would like to see a clear close-up photo of the front-sight attachment and muzzle crown area.

The value of your cut-down stock has been further marred by the addition of the pistol grip and 'stretched butt'.

Your Krag is worth about $250-$300, but, such Krags are hard to sell these days.

FWIW - To me the stock would look more pleasing with the 'pistol grip' gone.

A couple of years back, I bought a blemished carbine stock and 'whacked' the pistol grip off with a Saw and Files. It made the utility Stock more pleasing to my eye.

(Actually the remaining 'dovetailed' wood, glue, and screw-shanks makes the wrist stronger).

Your rear-sight is the model 1902 rifle sight.

Your front sight mounting looks like you have an actual 22 inch carbine barrel.

Is your action marked model 1898 or model 1899?

This one kind of intrigues me, because it has the same shortened nose just like mine does. Also, it has the same lower band without a spot for the lug.

Mine's a model 1898 though (1902 manufacture), and I believe has a 24" barrel, plus an after market front and rear sight, so there we start to differ.
