Title: Norwegian Krag Post by 6.5swede on Mar 5th, 2017 at 4:18am
Hi all.
I've used a 96 Swede for decades but have always liked the slick Krag. Was able to buy one off of a retiring gunsmith & have 5 months to set it up for elk season. I don't want a side-mount scope, so a receiver sight will do for my old eyes. I plan on epoxying the sight on & threading the mounting holes to act as "pullers" if my kids wish to restore the rifle. Does anyone know if the Williams 5D series for the 30-40 will fit the Norse krag? |

'6.5swede' - Welcome to the KCA Forum.
I never cared much for 'Williams Gun Sight Co.' products or all the butchering of Military Rifles they encouraged. I am not sure of what products they make now. FWIW - Here are some products they offered in the 1960s and 70s to contribute to the delinquency of a Norwegian Krag. Williams is still in business in Davison, Michigan. |

It is your rifle, do what you want but there are more new shooter collectors today trying very hard to return these collectible military rifles that were sporterized back to original condition.
I would encourage you not to drill it or glue it. One modification on Krags I have seen is to find a replacement side plate and fashion an offset scope mount on that. You can always remove it and put the original back. But drilled is drilled. Here is an example of what can be done with Williams mounts and sights. I bought this rifle with a large parts lot to get the other goodies the man was selling. So I kept it. But I would not modify an original in this day and age when there are so many other options for sporting rifles. Cat Man |

Many thanks, butlersrangers & Cat Man for the feedback.
It's not that I'm too lazy to do my own research (scanned every page of the Krag sub-forum), but currently am doing wolf depredation control, with spotty cell coverage. Have got my daughter trying to get that eBay Krag sight, but there's a problem shipping to canada. It's our dammm socialist govt... anyone want to grab that N. Krag sight, I'll double the usd to you. |

'6.5swede' - I snagged the sight for you on ebay.
This is a favor. I don't want to make any money off of you, and fully understand the predicament. Send me a Personal Message through the Forum with your address. |

Cat Man, why are you averse to having a sight epoxied to a Krag?
I would think that it would be the least invasive means available. I'm not sure if the chemical reaction will alter the tint of the blueing. |

'6.5swede' - I'm glad the Williams (Norwegian Krag) Sight got to you safe and sound.
Has your Norwegian Krag had its stock and barrel 'cut-down' to make it a 'sporting' rifle? If is no longer 'as issued', I would not feel guilty having it 'drilled and tapped' for proper mounting of the Williams sight. As you know, Hunting puts a lot of bumps and stress on equipment. Sights should be mounted solidly. (p.s. I didn't know what to make of the WW2 items pictured on the back of your note. There's got to be a good story there! Is the medallion Italian? The picture was fuzzy). |

An old N Ontario Finn friend said that, in the fifties, he had skied into
remote POW camps. In a pile of German mailbags, he found this. A lapal pin as a "small garden award"? I don't know. 6.5x55 (natch) for scale |

'6.5swede' - The pin is a neat POW camp relic.
REICHSBUND DEUTSCHER KLEINGARTNER It does appear to be a Third Reich award or recognition for having a small vegetable garden. |

I just bought a barreled receiver at an auction. It is dated 1915 so I'm assuming it is an M1912 carbine. Where would I be able to find enough parts to make it a proper rifle again?

'jdgoltz' - Welcome to the KCA Forum.
Both Norwegian model 1894 rifles and model 1912 carbines were built in 1915. The serial number is the clue to telling what your Krag was originally. 1915 made m-1894 Rifle numbers likely fall between 106,782 to 110,281. 1915 made m-1912 Carbine numbers likely fall between 4,069 to 8,751. Norwegian Krag parts show up on ebay and GunBroker, but, tend to be very expensive. It is likely cheaper to buy a complete Norwegian Krag than to attempt 're-building' one from parts. Just a heads up: Norwegian Krag barrels have a Left-Hand Thread. |
Title: Re: Norwegian Krag Post by Jdgoltz on Nov 7th, 2017 at 11:40am
Thanks for the information, especially the barrel thread. Serial number says carbine. I'll probably buy a complete one eventually, but rebuilding/refinishing old guns is my hobby so I think eventually it'll get rebuilt. I've just never had a Krag before so its a new type of rifle for me. I've always wanted one so I hurried up and bought it at the auction for $50 thinking it was a US model. 6.5 is a nice cartridge anyway.

If you post some pictures, you will get a lot more information.
How is the bore on your Norwegian Krag? FWIW - In my experience, the 6.5X55mm is a great cartridge, but, if a 6.5 mm rifle bore is rough and dark, accuracy disappears and bullets begin to tumble. |
