It is your rifle, do what you want but there are more new shooter collectors today trying very hard to return these collectible military rifles that were sporterized back to original condition.

I would encourage you not to drill it or glue it. One modification on Krags I have seen is to find a replacement side plate and fashion an offset scope mount on that. You can always remove it and put the original back.

But drilled is drilled. Here is an example of what can be done with Williams mounts and sights. I bought this rifle with a large parts lot to get the other goodies the man was selling. So I kept it. But I would not modify an original in this day and age when there are so many other options for sporting rifles.
