Title: Need help ID'ing Buttstock Number on My 1898 Rifle
Post by Bill G on Jun 4th, 2017 at 12:13am
I have a nice original 1898 Krag rifle, with a very sharp 1900 JSA cartouche on the wrist. Has it's original M1898 3-aperture sight, no modifications or changes of any kind. There is a very nicely stamped 3-digit number on the right side of the buttstock - see pics, no idea what it signifies - rack number? Nat'l Guard unit?? Or ?? It's very cleanly done, obviously with a fine metal die/stamp. The type font/style looks IMO to be 1900-1910 era. Would appreciate any input from members as to its identity or significance.
Thanks,
Bill
