Title: Cartridge feeding problem
Post by Kerz on Jul 7th, 2017 at 10:35am
Just FYI.  Finally got to the range yesterday to chrono (already reported) and have some fun trying out Paul’s speed loaders.  Never got to the speed loaders.  I ran into a major feeding/jam problem while attempting to charge a round from the magazine box.  The rounds would wedge tight when entering the barrel.

I contacted Chuck Moline (aka Chuck n Denver) about the problem.  Note this rifle was just rebarrelled.  He suspected a bent hinge pin rod or interference of sorts as the cartridge is being lifted toward the breach, e.g., rust, metal burr, etc.
The rod did have a slight bend.  I straighten and polished.  Also I polished the travel area of the cartridge in the magazine area.  No luck, still the same problem.

I redirected my attention to the breach of the new barrel.  The edge was very sharp.  Using a Dremel tool, I polished off the sharp edge.  Problem solved.

Mr. Dremel can be such a help.  Some would frown on cutting on the chamber, but the solid head of the case extends quite a ways into the chamber, about .187", and all that's needed is to break the edge.  Sometimes changing the sideplate will cure the problem too, but not always.

Two questions leap to mind:
1.  Have you fired some rounds since to ensure there are no gas leaks and further feed problems... and
2. Did you finally get to try out the chargers?

Two weeks to Perry.  Looking forward to meeting and shooting with you!

Hey Paul
Yelp, I've shot it and no leakage problems.  Keep in mind I only radius the lower edge.  Chargers work great, the guy behind them needs a little practice.
Yes look forward to meeting you as well.  We arrive 16-July.

'Kerz' - Your first photo did show what appeared to be a very sharp edge, at the mouth of your chamber, and brass metal shavings laying in the action's lug recess.

I'm sure your 'angling' that sharp edge did the trick.

Original Krag barrel chambers have a slight bevel or radius at the mouth.
