I freely admit my ignorance on these rare and specialized Krags. (The more I look and read, the more confused I become).

How do the systems or approaches differ?

What specific .22 cartridge were they chambered for?

How do you identify legitimate specimens?

What should one expect to pay?

Were they strictly a NG or State Militia thing?

Thanks in advance for any facts and observations.

I was really hoping someone would reply this thread, as I have been working on making a deal on one of these locally. The one I have my sights on is a standard 1898 Krag with a very high serial number and it has a Pope-Stevens .22 barrel. The chamber is off-center at the 12 o'clock position and here is a photo of the top of the barrel:

Well, the .22 Gallery Practice Krag rifle was made by Springfield Armory. The Pope Stevens .22 Krag was not a complete rifle but
was a barrel made by Pope to replace the regular barrel on a Model
1898 rifle. The bore was off center to allow the bolt to catch the rim of the .22 case and eject it. This does not always happen in
which case I use a cleaning rod to poke out the empty. I have
found that .22 shorts work best. I paid $2200.00 for my Pope
barreled Model 1898. Phil Schrier happened to be at the show
and he looked it over and said if I didn't jump on it he definitely
would. It is in immaculate condition and looks brand new. The pictures look correct. The Springfield Armory model is marked
.22 caliber rimfire. My rifle is fairly accurate for 200 yd. shooting
at clay pigeons and is fun to shoot .

The Gallery Practice rifle uses an auxiliary extractor and the chamber is offset to the 6 O'clock position. The Stevens -Pope conversion does not have the auxiliary extractor and so the chamber is in the 12 O'clock location.

Stevens-Pope barrels are not exclusive to Model 1898 rifles. Mine is on an 1896 rifle.
