Title: Krag serial number
Post by oldguy on Sep 13th, 2017 at 3:46pm
I am looking at buying a Krag, ser#484285.  It looks to be in  good shape and I was wondering of this serial number is valid.  If so, when might it have been Manufactured and what else should I look for before I buy.  the guy wants 375$.

There are higher known U.S. Krag serial numbers, but, #484285 would have been made near the end of Krag production.

IMHO - It was likely assembled September to November, 1903, (per Bill Mook's: "Krag Crap" production notes).

A complete, original and shootable model 1898 Krag rifle would be a good buy at $375.

If the stock and barrel have been cut down for 'Hunting', that is too expensive.

Look for barrel to be 30 inches, Stock to be complete and without serious damage, original sights, screws & parts, and no 'scope mount holes' drilled and tapped into receiver.

Gun values are always tied to 'condition, condition, condition'.

Re-finished wood and metal destroys collector value and desirability.

My rifles serial number starts with 488 so as butlersrangers said it was made near the end.

I agree if it is a complete rifle $375 is a good price.
