Title: The Last of the Kitchen and Christmas $
Post by bote on Sep 27th, 2017 at 10:04pm
Been a long time since I went this far out on a limb.  A complete set of M1 carbines became available for a price per rifle I couldn't turn down.  Unfortunately/fortunately there are 10 of them.  Sort of like buying in bulk.  They arrived in a wooden crate that weighed just over 100 pounds.  They've since been moved to a safe but it was neat to see them arranged side by side in the crate and note all the subtle differences between the 10 manufacturers.  I know the site is for Krags but I figure many of you have the "little guns" and might find this of interest.

I would find it of particular interest... especially if ole Bote sent Paul a nice M1 Carbine for a Christmas Present!  LOL   :D

That sure is an incredible find!  Congratulations to you...

I believe they're nine M1 manufactures.  Is one of the carbines a duplicate or an atypical manufactured M1 carbine?

1.  IBM
2.  Inland (General Motors)
3.  National Postal Meter
4.  Quality Hardware
5.  Rockola Jukebox
6.  Saginaw
7.  S'G' (Irwin-Peterson contract)
8.  Standard Products
9.  Underwood Typewriter
10.  Winchester
There are also some variations on these ten.  Irwin-Peterson made a couple hundred that never passed inspection and were never issued so the army gave the contract to Saginaw.  Saginaw management built them successfully in the plant formerly operated by I-P to the I-P design.  These are marked S'G'.
A friend owns the rarest possible variation.  Quality Hardware subcontracted to Union Switch and Signal for some of their receivers.  These are marked UN-QUALITY.

Neptune's briny pants!  I've never seen so many carbines in one place.  The problem is now you need a pallet of ammo to feed the new kids.

Did you get fifteen rounders or thirty rounders in the deal?  Don't tell us you got slickered in the deal and no mags came with them. :o

I got 28 mags, 4 still in the wrapper.  Both 15 and 30 rounders.  I also got 1200 rounds of ammo, some loaded by the previous owner and some USGI from the 50's which I plan to keep.  Got a bunch of slings, parts, stock mount magazine holders and a really nice USMC case.

What would you think if your newly issued rifle had "UN-QUALITY" stamped on the receiver?

Awesome!!!!!

Terrible crating job though - unless they were wrapped/padded against the dividers. Military cases (at least from the musket to 1903 era) provided - through an intreicate set of small blocks - minimal possibilites for rubbing and bouncing around in shipment.

(Still awesome, though)

Thanks for sharing!
