Title: First Krag Identity of service
Post by First US Milsurp 1 on Oct 16th, 2017 at 1:23am
Hello all, I bought my first Krag. I can feel the love for this rifle grow and all I've done is clean it. It's a model Springfield 1898, bayonet 1899 on ricasso and blued scabbard. To my delight there was an oiler and 3 piece cleaning rod in the stock. It has a 30" barrel. Serial number of rifle is 362866. On the right side of the stock is painted in white "9NY427". I guess this once belonged to the NY Guard?. Any help in I'd would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum, and to the wonderful world of Krags!  Careful... they're addicting!!!

Most likely, that is a unit rack number.  How about posting some pictures?

I,m trying to figure out how to get a picture from my phone to Kindle. It also has a brass tag above the top butt plate screw. Above the screw is the number 1790. Below the screw it states. R. C. And below that is the number 142.
I guess the kids or grandchildren will figure out the pictures for me.

'Clean Bolt' --  Welcome to the KCA Forum. It sounds like you have an interesting Krag rifle. Nothing listed in the SRS data for #362866 in Mallory's "Krag Rifle Story", 2nd edition, appendix.

Your Krag was assembled around November or December,  1901.

The brass tag or disk suggests to me that your rifle was once in a museum, factory, or private collection. Institutions and 'spiffy' collectors use to do that for cataloging purposes.

Thank you for the information. I will work on getting pictures on the forum. I cleaned a small amount of cosmolene off the rifle and know it has been a safe queen for the last 40 years. The gentlemen's widow sold it to me and I know he did not catalog in that manner. I am trying to purchase his Springfield trapdoor.
Thanks again, jim
