Whether or not you can get away with two depends on some factors.  Weight of the scope, how much red locktite you use, how hot you get the barrel during a shooting session.  I've successfully used the short mount without modification when using a 1901 handguard, but had to take a bit off the bottom to get it to fit an 1896 handguard.  Can't recall if I've tried it with a 98 or 02 handguard, probably have. The screws only came loose on me once after the barrel got warm enough to soften the Loctite.
