Post by carbon outlaw on Mar 14th, 2018 at 7:14pm
I came across this interesting tool ... I thought it mite be a krag takedown tool ... It is in a package packed in kosmoline ... Stock number is J012-55-64038... Part number is 5554038 ... I think it is a old krag tool that was repacked ??? But perhaps for some other kind of a rifle ??? Don't know ... Any ideas ... ???

Nice tool - It is intended for the 1903 Springfield. It is probably from WW1 era.

1903 and 1903A3 tools use to be quite common and inexpensive. They are becoming more difficult to find at previously low prices.

The Krag Tool is similar, but, has a shorter 'punch pin' and lacks the small screwdriver at the hinge rivet.

The Krag version is far less common (than the 1903 tool) and will sell for $35 to $100. It is sometimes called "1894 tool" and sometimes "1897 tool".

IMHO - The 'punch-pin' is kind of silly. It was used mainly to remove barrel-band springs from the gun stock and the 'hinge-pin' from the  Butt-Trap. Two things that seem undesireable to have soldiers performing.

These tools are illustrated in some of the period U.S. ORDNANCE MANUALS.
