Title: This 1898 Carbine Seems Legit...
Post by Juniorloaf on Mar 27th, 2018 at 9:58am
Have an opportunity to buy this at what I believe is a very fair price, even considering the issues that are apparent. I just wanted a second (third, fourth etc) opinion.

I apologize in advance for the pics... they're what I was given. Here's what I know about the rifle

Model: 1898 Krag
Serial number: 124,532
Barrel Length: 22" exactly on a closed bolt
Rear sight: 1901 with 'c' on rear sight base and ladder (the slide part)
Handguard: the longer carbine style
Stock: has band spring, appears correct length (1" removed notwithstanding), visible P proof and 1901 cartouche.
Front sight: very well done dovetail, looks like part of the barrel.

The bad:
-butt portion has about 1" of missing material that was cut. (Sad face)
-swivel stud added to buttstock
-swivel stud added to barrel band
-cant see a 'c' on front sight blade

Also comes with a rough (albeit original) looking M1903/M1907 sling.

Questions:
-am I right to believe this is a legit 1898 carbine?
-would you find someone to attempt to repair the stock, or seek a new one?
-who do you recommend for repairs?
-anybody have a spare type 1899 stock they'd part with if not?
-anybody have a proper band?
-what about a buttplate & screws?

Last but not least... what would you all pay for this, with a very good bore? Taking into account the sling.

Although probably built originally as a M98 carbine, it was upgraded to the M99 Carbine configuration ( long stock, no sling ring/bar, and the M901 Carbine sight ). Most of the M98 Carbines, as yours,  were turned into M99 carbines. With the stock issues, I think this carbine is worth less than $1,000.

Your front sight blade may be a carbine blade for use with a model 1896 carbine rear sight. These blades are shorter and the 'C' is hidden by the base.

I just bought this Krag from him. I found a donor sportarized stock.  Any recommendations on best source for a front band if I can't remove the swivel.

Thanks,
Mark

The model 1899 carbine barrel-bands show up frequently on ebay.

They are available in various grades from "Grandpa's Gun Parts" (a.k.a. Movieman 630 on ebay). He is listed in KCA Classifieds.

IIRC - Price is often around $50 to $60 on ebay.
