I think that is all revisionist 'Ball Bearings"!

It was comedy and they were comic actors, looking for work. TV and Hollywood did not have the 'Social Conscience' in 1965 - 1971, that gets 'lectured' to us in everything, now. (Thank God).

Sgt. Schultz was 'Everyman' in an impossible circumstance.  He was the "Stockholm Syndrome" in reverse. He totally identified with the POW's. He liked them as individuals and just wanted to belong and be Loved.
He did not have a mean bone in his well groomed, neat & clean uniformed, over-weight body. It was easy to 'Identify' with him. He was more trapped than the POWs.

.... and his Krag rifle was 'Every Gun'.

When I want historical authenticity, I watch the original movie version of the "Producers" - 'Spring Time for Hitler and Germany'.

Actor Ken Mars, as 'Franz Liebkind' (love child?), was one Konflicted Kraut!
