This period illustrator took some artistic liberty when he had this National Guardsman answering Uncle Sam's call with a Martini-Henry rifle.

(The clenched fist and apparent look of disgust on Sam's face is understandable. Do I detect an impending eye-roll)?

I'm not sure what the meaning of this illustration is and if it had any significant meaning. Uncle Sam has an almost feminine stance. And the guard has a darkened nose like he had been doing a lot of drinking or something. I may be way off base, but I'm not getting something here.

The Print was from a work, available by subscription, "Wright's Official History of the Spanish American War", published 1900.

Likely intent of artist was to convey U.S. National Spirit. I guess he was neither accurate nor highly talented.

Patriotic works were all the rage!
