Title: U.S. Krag Jorgensen Rifles Built
Post by Knute1 on May 28th, 2018 at 2:47am
Going through all the Chief of Ordnance Reports, an effort was made to get the exact number built. And.........can't get there from here. Explained below:

Year ending 6/30/1894:  2,951 rifles manufactured

Year ending 6/30/1895:  14,491 rifles manufactured

Year ending 6/30/1896:  10,535 rifles; 7,111 carbines; 404 cadets manufactured

Year ending 6/30/1897:  28,899 rifles; 2,930 carbines manufactured

Year ending 6/30/1898:  29,556 rifles; 12,022 carbines manufactured

Year ending 6/30/1899:  88,150 rifles; 5,923 carbines were SHIPPED Here lies a problem. Shipped versus manufactured are likely not the same.

But carrying on...........

Year ending 6/30/1900:  54,701 rifles; 5,150 carbines manufactured

Year ending 6/30/1901:  59,400 rifles and carbines manufactured (the number was combined)

Year ending 6/30/1902:  43,246 rifles; twenty thousand carbines manufactured (20,000 seems not to be an exact figure)

Year ending 6/30/1903:  61,838 rifles (model of 1898) manufactured

Year ending 6/30/1904:  47,927 magazine rifles were manufactured. This would likely include both model of 1898 and model of 1903 as the 1898 was made into November 1903. It was not separated out. Another number that is not exact enough.

Insufficient data. But I tried. :'(

Thanks for the effort.  While you are digging, is there any mention of Model 1898 Gallery Practice Rifles?  They did not appear until 1907 or 1908.

Waterman, here is a link from a 1914 military book mentioning the gallery gun for colleges starting on page 337.

There was just a tidbit of info in the 1907 Ordnance Report for the 1898 Gallery Rifle. None in the 1908.

All is not lost, yet. The number of Krags built in fiscal year ending 6/30/1904 has been found. The split out of total magazine rifles built (47,927) is 17,424 of the model 1898 and 30,503 of the model 1903. This leaves the year 1899 to be found and the year 1902 to be verified. Numbers are being found in Congressional reports. Below is a portion of the 1904 report. The blank spot is a table that didn't come thru the Paint file.

Here is a second go round. I have neither a Brophy or Mallory book, but I do have a Poyer book. Some numbers agree, some don't. The numbers I used came off the Chief of Ordnance reports where possible. Others came off Congressional reports regarding "Expenditures at the Springfield Armory". Not all could be found of the latter. Really could use the one from 1901 where the rifles and carbines are not broken out in the Ordnance Report. These expenditure reports, when found, list all guns, parts, repairs, and alterations performed during the fiscal year. Even includes every pin and screw made for the year, quite detailed.
Regarding the .22cal gallery model of 1898 guns, besides the 341 built in fiscal year 1907 there were also 124 barrel/receiver combinations built. Another 37 receivers for the model of 1898 gallery guns were fabricated in 1908. (These numbers came off the expenditure reports.)
I don't claim any of these numbers are accurate, just wanted to see if anything sensible could be determined off the reports mentioned and how they compared to other published numbers.
Next I will be getting the count of 1892's altered/converted to 1896 from the expenditure reports. Then my research will be pretty much over, giving everybody else a break from all my posts of late.  :D

Here is the fiscal year ending 6/30/1901 report for Springfield Armory expenditures. It shows the breakdown on rifles and carbines and more (Parkhurst, etc.). I am presently unable to update the spreadsheet (lightning/computers don't mix). I don't have a Mallory book so I don't know if this is well known info or not.

There were 45,579 rifle made plus 100 more with Parkhurst attachments for a total of 45,679.

There were 10,801 carbines made with 100 more with Parkhurst attachements plus 2,820 more without sights for a total of 13,721.

Total for rifles and carbines is 59,400.

This fiscal year ending 6/30/1900 report breaks down the Model 1898 rifles built with 1898 sights and 1896 sights.
(33,920 vs. 20,781)
Looks like another project to expand the above table.

Interesting pages!

Not many of those 33,920 magazine rifles and 5,150 magazine carbines with model 1898 rear-sights, would remain 'wearing' those sights.

"18,608 screw-drivers model 1897" - dang they are getting hard to find!

Here is the table done to the best of my ability. It includes only the arms built at the Springfield Armory. The numbers came off the Ordnance Reports and Springfield Armory Expenditure Reports. I am pretty much done with this unless anybody has a specific question I can try and investigate.
