Title: 1896 Krag Carbine with 1901 Cartouche Stock Post by Ljspoon on Jun 12th, 2018 at 11:28pm
Hello all, I just received my 1896 Krag Carbine and wanted to share it with everyone. No hit in the SRS and I do not have access to other serial number lists if there are any. It is marked only with the 1896, serial number is 34221. It retains its original, properly marked 1896 carbine rear sight, the front blade was changed out for a Lyman. The barrel is exactly 22 inches and the stock is 30 inches. The stock is in great shape and is a lighter color, maybe Italian Walnut? It has a JSA 1901 Cartouche and a P proof on the wrist along with a small number 60. There is a C.B stamped on the flat that is under the magazine and an X stamped where the receiver ring sits. The Handguard is missing its nose but is otherwise decent. The bore is excellent.

That is a bit of a rarity, a short for end stock with no sling bar cut out. Not a replacement with a cartouch. Springfield paid royalties on completed rifles so cartouches were used sparingly It seems that a number of older receivers/actions were put together in 1901 probably to keep people busy.

Noticed that the front sight has a Lyman white [ivory] beaded blade. I found a gold one on fleabay for my rifle. I had trouble seeing my original blade. The op’s carbine is sharp and was evidently shot or hunted with so it had a life after its possible military career. I wish these things could talk.

Nice looking carbne. My first Krag (34036) was dressed out as a rifle. ...and some chucklehead reamed it out for .30-06 blanks. Looked like a black stove pipe with no rifling.
