Post by kragy on Jun 14th, 2018 at 12:45pm
Hi, Have a krag carbine #34644, told there was a hit on the SRS database; would like to join SRS and get any more info they have but having trouble getting in contact with them at the email they have listed. Can anyone help with a good email add to join up with them? Thank You Mark

Hi Kragy,

According to Franklin B. Mallory with Ludwig Olson's book "The Krag Rifle Story", 2nd Edition, Appendix 20, "Serial Numbers of Known U.S. Krags" your serial number 34644 is listed as an 1896 carbine that was manufactured on 01/07/1898 and used by the 3rd Cavalry.

I'm not sure what email address was used?... but here's the website with the email address listed:

Not sure of the validity of the eBay item but I'm thinking about purchasing a copy.

Any members have any thoughts about this eBay item???

As far as the Ebay item is concerned, I'd put that seller in pretty much the same category as the a$$holes who sell/rent fake cartouche stamps. The most charitable word for it would be a "sharp practice" (lawyer term when attempting to sanitize something which everyone knows is a wobbler). SRS dug those records out at great personal effort and expense. I've had my differences with Wayne Gagner over the years, but I'd be 100% behind him sueing this jerk.

I don't care how many spaces this guy typed into the (scanned) SRS data, in my opinion he HAS violated the copyright and should be prosecuted for same, and NOT patronized.

Yes, I DID include some serials (which ARE public domain) from the SRS books in "More .45-70s" but NOT any related data, AND I not only credited SRS but gave them special recognition. It should also be noted that many of the "SRS serials" occur in other period references.

Thank you Dick for your insight!

I was looking for some senior member input before purchasing something that, IMHO, appeared to be possibly bordering on copyright infringement.

I WILL NOT be purchasing that Ebay item!
