Title: Photo shows possible model 1898 rifle rear-sight
Post by butlersrangers on Jun 23rd, 2018 at 6:04pm
Yesterday, I noticed a period photograph for sale on ebay of a couple of Black U.S. Soldiers.

The most interesting point to me was that the Krag Rifle seems to have a model 1898 rear-sight.

This is the sight whose base was contoured for the trajectory of the short lived 2,200 F.P.S. .30-40 cartridge, that was blamed for 'cracking' bolt-lugs.

It is believed this sight, with its lower base (curve), was on issued Krags 'in the field' for a relatively short period of time.

It would be neat if this photograph was 'dated' and further placed in context.
