Thomas can obtain a relatively common model 1896 rifle sight and screws, (as well as, an inexpensive reference book), as a first step.

Time is on his side. He can enjoy the carbine as his forbearers did, increase his knowledge, decide what he wants to do, and shop judiciously.

It's good to have choices and the mindset of "doing no harm".
