Title: Tried a different load today
Post by butlersrangers on Aug 11th, 2018 at 3:01am
I recently picked up some 170 grain, .30 caliber - 'flat nosed', Sierra bullets for reloading .30-30 Winchester.

I decided to give them a try, with some IMR-4831 and RWS primers (that a friend had given me), in a cut-down model 1896 Krag.

The rounds look a bit funny with the 170 grain Sierra bullets seated 'out' for a 3.020" over all cartridge length. But, the rounds fed smoothly from a full magazine and bullets were adequately gripped.

Cases were once fired and 'neck-sized' only using a Lee 'Collet Die' intended for 7.5X55mm Swiss. Cases were worked minimally and no lube was needed.

Powder charge was 44 grains of IMR-4831, which burned very clean.

This was an easy to load, pleasant to shoot, and accurate combination.

Iron sights and 1X Reading Glasses were used. The first group printed low at 50 yards. Moving elevation-slide to 300 yard mark and a minor windage correction, almost centered the group.
