Title: My 1898 krag rifle
Post by kwc271 on Aug 19th, 2018 at 7:11pm
Hello everyone, first time poster here. I just acquired myself a 1898 krag rifle and was wondering if anyone can trace the serial number to see where it was sent or to whom it was issued

Thanks for all your help,
Kevin

It seems I can’t post pics, they are too large. The serial number is 130802

Welcome to the forum, long time no see.

You have to resize your photos to below 768K.  Use MS Paint to get them down if you have a windows box.

"Allowed file types: txt doc docx psd pdf bmp jpe jpg jpeg gif png swf zip rar tar
Maximum Attachment size: 768 KB"

Data is scanty across four hundred and eighty thousand guns and a hundred and twenty-five years but here is what Mallory and Olson has listed.

Serial Model MMDDYY Usage
130802 98R 011507 USNA

Here are a couple of Naval Academy photographs showing your Krag in action, with Cadet Paul Steinmayer, (Note red arrows).

'kwc' - Welcome to the KCA Forum.

All kidding aside, you are very fortunate to have a Krag listed in Springfield Research Services (SRS) data.

Only a small percentage of Krags were found recorded in the extensive official documents, researched by Frank Mallory, (Author of "The Krag Rifle Story").

Most of us have yet to own a Krag that is so listed.

WooHooo!  (Your Krag could be in these photos)!

Cadet Paul Steinmayer reporting for duty!

You are very lucky Keith!  I'm fortunate to know the history of my 1898 rifle, and there's amazing history there... but I still don't have a hit, and that's the gold standard, my friend!

Now, I have to don my working whites and head to the range.  (I wonder how they got the grass stains out of those whites!)   ;D

I love old historical photos. Being a still photographer these pictures are maybe 125th of a second long piece of these peoples lives. They were just like you and me, just happened to get their picture taken at that moment on that day at that place. I always think that I’m looking at ghosts as I’m pretty sure everyone here has left the building. Neat. Thanks for posting.

I love the stuff that wasn't intended to be in an Historic Picture.

Circled in red - 'Road Apples', a hazard of any parade involving horses!

Red Arrow - The Hole in the Space-Time Continuum, that Steinmayer passed through. (Oh...OK, probably damage to the photo negative ... or ... is it)?

BTW - KWC's Krag, #130802, was manufactured around September, 1898. It had use and a history, before being sent to the Naval Academy, in 1907.

Have I ever mentioned my 1898 carbine.  ...that is in the sacred book of Mallory, peace be unto him?

You need a bigger arrow.  I have two.  Or maybe a circle would be better.

It's all a matter of perspective:

The origin of the Army - Navy Game.

Two military academies contesting a pile of manure!

(IMHO - Navy is going to Win. They are closer)!

To be honest... I'd like to know how I wound up in the band???

My WW1 Krag is SN 132598, and I wish it had a hit!

FWIW, my brother and I both used to dabble in photography.  We both had several cameras, including medium formats, and we both had full dark rooms (I still have all of my dark room equipment, but I sold off my cameras).  In addition, my Grandfather (maternal) was a professional photographer and worked for Jam Handy (one of his top photogs)!

Ok, time to head back through the portal.  C'mon Culpeper... we got some marching to do!
