'Joe L.': FYI - (I responded to your other post regarding the 'peep plate' on Krag sights).

If you post some clear & close-up pictures of your Krag's markings and features, it can generate more knowledgeable responses.

The U.S. Krag served, during WW1, in training camps and with U.S. Engineer units in Britain and France.

It was issued to many State Troops and National Guard units, prior to replacement, with the 1903 Springfield, around 1913-14.

I suppose "51" could be 51st Regiment or a "rifle rack #"?

"5" could be 5th Division, or a State '5th' regiment, or a rack #.

Lots of possibilities!
