Title: Finished with finishes, a stock answer
Post by Mark_Daiute on Nov 17th, 2018 at 3:21am
Joe farmer references and documents a stock finish in his book. Recently I was gifted a very late, nearly pristine, 1898 Krag rifle. I have repaired 7 or 8 bub'ad Krags and on the last 4 or so I have used the recipe Joe mentions in his book. I was struck by how closely the finish on my replacement forends match the original stock on the 1898 just gifted to me.

How about describing your mixture and application technique? Pictures?

hmmmm. tough one, I wan't to share but I paid for the book. I want others to buy the book, not for me, not for Joe, but for the Krag rifles we all love. So, at the risk of coming across like a jerk I'll suggest buying the book. Please don't think ill of me. Buy the book, no matter how you feel about Joe and then get on his website and get the full-proof documentation on those damned Magazine rifles. He's nailed it and he's sitting on the documents. Again, don't think ill of me, I am not trying to be an ass.

As a fellow jerk ::),  I do not feel ill about you wanting Mr. Farmer to get his due.  He worked hard for the reward of his labors.  However you forgot a link for his book.

Here is 5MadFarmers link for all of you Krag lurkers out there.

Then get your backsides in here and tell us about your walk with Jesus, I mean, Krags.

He has a sale going on at the moment.  Buy three at the price of five and get one free.;)

(BTW you are not a jerk.  Your dues to the Brotherhood of Jerks Union are not current. That's what the the treasurer tells me.) Thank you for looking out for Joe.

I thought I had paid for two years earlier this year, maybe that covered the last two! will send out a check tomorrow! And thanks for the understanding. Joe let me know there are some easter eggs left out and they are there if someone is willing to hunt for them.

Classic ! This is the gun hobby I know so very well.  Secret Knowledge, and unabashed and right out in open too, you got to respect 'that'.

Hi, I ASSUME that we'd buy the Volume 5 Krag book, but we all know the ASSUME acronym.  I have two, an 1896 Carbine that's at least mostly original.  At least the parts are all original now, no extractor when I bought it.  I also have a 1898 rifle.  The finishes are all dark.  Neither were sporterized, but both were missing some parts.  I've shot both and the rifle shots very nicely.  The Carbine is getting a new barrel, but I get the old one back.

How much refinishing on the wood is too much?  I"ve heard use the green cleaner, use Pure Tung Oil, use paint thinner, don't dare touch it, etc.

Thanks

'Mike1861' - Welcome to the KCA Forum.

A lot of us enjoy pictures.

Close and clear photos, of what your stocks look like, can bring lots of useful observations and suggestions for wood care.

Is this the Vol. 6 book?

Went to the webpage. No place to register. Last posts were months ago. Doesn't seem to be any activity.

Yes Volume 6.  There is no registration.  Just old school.  You send moola as described in his forum post.  He sends book.

Hi

I have an 1898 Krag Rifle and I'd like an idea on how much re-finishing / cleaning I should do with it.  I haven't ordered the book yet, but am planning to.

Thanks

Mike
