Post by Jeremyf on Nov 25th, 2018 at 6:18pm
Hey Everyone. Just wanted to share with you guys my Krag I just fixed up. Huge thank you goes out to Butlersrangers for all his fantastic advise. He pointed out a few things that were incorrect and I was able to track down the parts via this forum. The serial number is 77756. I’ve attached a few pics

Nice seeing another Krag, especially a carbine, being taken care of by somebody that knows what he has.

Congratulations on having an authentic 1896 Krag Carbine! There are some condition issues but these are uncommon enough that condition doesn't matter as much. Your carbine, made in 1898, is wearing the 1896 rifle sight which is very common because the correct 1896 carbine sight is very difficult to find today and will cost upwards of $600. The patina certainly shows lots of honest use and wear.

I wonder if it's just the picture and shadows but the butt plate looks separated from the stock somewhat. I don't know what that means but a better picture might clear that up. there might be some damage to the rear of the stock if it is indeed separated.

My main question would be the condition of the bore. With so much wear externally, I would be concerned that the bore may be in bad shape. Hopefully not. Please let us know if you can tell.

Almost all of my Krags come into my house needing a good bore cleaning. The bore always looks nicer after some good Krag lovin' TLC!

Hope you can shoot and enjoy your carbine if it is bullet worthy!

It looks like the rear sight ladder is stamped with a “C” in photo four indicating the sight is a correct carbine sight. If that is a gap between the stock and buttplate, a skilled woodworker can re-inlet the buttplate to fit better. Maybe lose 1/16” or so of wood. Just a thought.

Thank you for pointing that out. The picture was so dark, I misread it. When I lightened the picture, the "c" is visible.

It does look like a correct slide, if the base is also the carbine base.

That makes it even nicer.

Hey guys. Here’s another pic of the butt stock. When I got this Krag from my father in law it had a diy brass butt plate so I’m assuming the gaps are from some sanding. I removed this makeshift butt plate and replaced it with one that I found online. As far as the barrel, i tried to take a pic down the barrel but it was difficult. The bore is shiny with no obvious pitting or corrosion. It appears bright when I shine a flashlight down the bore.

Jeremy - Nice job of putting this model 1896 carbine back in its original configuration.

You did good and I'm sure you are glad you went to the effort!
