Title: 99 Carbine
Post by Old Soldier on Nov 26th, 2018 at 2:02am
A local gun shop has a really nice 99 carbine in great shape. It is so nice that some one cut the butt stock an added a puss pad. (The 30-40 has massive recoil as you know.) He wants $800 for it. How hard is it to find the correct stock? and at what price should one expect?

A correct 1899 carbine stock is not common and cost will be high 400.00 plus. I bought a carbine that needs a stock but have not found one in 2 plus years. Check the barrel and sights as well. 800.00 is a high price if it's missing much or has a replacement barrel.

The only way to get a carbine stock, or rifle stock for that matter, is to buy it from some clod who parts out other carbines or rifles leaving behind another stripped carbine or rifle for one of us to rescue and hope to find a stock for it.

I hate that game.

If the stock is not badly damaged from Bubba where it was chopped, and is good everywhere else, it might be easier to splice a replacement piece back on and refit a correct metal butt plate. Replacement butt plates are on ebay all the time for reasonable prices. This would be tons easier than finding another correct stock that isn't damaged or altered in some other way.

If the carbine is wearing a correct rear and front sight and the bore is good, it might be worth seeing if they would take $600 or $650 for it, focusing on the "ruined" stock.

Good luck. We'd love to see pictures if you do pick it up!
