Title: Krag books????
Post by leadhead on Nov 28th, 2018 at 8:43pm
Trying to find a decent book on Krag rifles and carbines.
Is the book by Joe Poyer 3rd edition any good? I don't
want to spend a arm and leg for it, but want something
decent. Thanks for any info.

Joe Poyer's book is very inexpensive (about $25) and the 3rd edition is essentially identical to the 2nd edition.

"The American Krag Rifle and Carbine" is a very handy reference and convenient to use. It was kind of aimed at Krag 'newbies'. Poyer has good photographs and graphics.

I find his paper bond book very useful and take it on trips and to gun shows. There are (approximate) tables of serial numbers and likely month & year of production. There are lots of blank pages that are convenient places to put your own 'Krag notes'.

Poyer has some errors in his text and picture captions. He breaks down part and model variations into "Types", that are not official and not used by knowledgeable Krag collectors. It is misleading to make Krag serial numbers and date of production as 'specific and exact', as Poyer has.

I enjoy the Krag books of Mallory (The Krag Rifle Story), Brophy (The Krag Rifle), and Poyer. All books have faults and errors. My hat off to anyone who goes through the research, work and creative effort to produce a credible "Gun Reference" that throws light on the subject.

I went and ordered the Poyer book. It looks like it will be plenty
enough info for this old brain to handle...Thanks for the replies.

FWIW - If anyone has been looking for a copy of William Brophy's book, "The Krag Rifle", I noticed a few listed on Ebay tonight, (search - Krag Rifle), priced around $100 - 'Buy Now'.

That seems a fair price.
