Title: Capsule Magazine?
Post by butlersrangers on Dec 12th, 2018 at 6:05am
I do not recall ever hearing the term "Capsule Magazine", until last week.

Two new KCA members have used this term in videos recently appearing on the KCA forum.

I see this term is also used in the Wikipedia description of the Krag-Jorgensen.

It is applied to the Krag's unique 'wrap around' magazine, which is an integral part of the receiver.

Possibly, this is a European and/or British gun term or classification.

Any thoughts? Has anyone run across the term in U. S. literature, reports, or manuals?

Were the videos from the Brits?  One can only guess at some of their terms, but maybe that's expected from one who uses a "lou" when everyone knows his name is "john"?

"Capsule Magazine" was used in videos made by 'JDR' (British) and 'AP2020'.

Both gentlemen are recent KCA recruits and posted links, to their interesting 'you tube' videos, on KCA threads that they initiated.

I'm not contesting the term; it is just new to me in regard to Firearms.

Sometimes you just have to read ... or at least try, with Norwegian!

Karl Egil Hanevik's book, "Krag-Jorgensen Gevaeret", throws some light on "Capsule Magazine".

Ole Herman Johannes Krag devised a 'Kapselmagasin' for the Jarmann bolt action rifle around 1882. This magazine held nine or ten rounds.

When Denmark showed interest in Krag's Kapselmagasingevaer, the design evolved into the Krag-Jorgensen 'Halvkapselmagasingevaer'' or Half-Capsule Magazine Rifle which had a slimmer five round magazine.

So at least in Europe, the term Capsule Magazine, goes back to the origins of the Krag-Jorgensen rifle.

Learn something new every day!

I thought this would be an easy assignment. I haven't found anything except for CRsenal's segment on the Krag Jorgensen. Othias discusses the capsule concept 5-1/2 minutes into the video. This video was also brought up in another post, but here it is again:

Hanevik's book has a wealth of information. To bad there is not an English language edition.

Krag's 'capsule-magazine' for the Jarmann evolved into the 'half capsule-magazine' of the Krag-Jorgensen.

I think the storm troopers in the next episode of Star Wars are going to be armed with an updated version of this rifle. Would probably outclass the tweaked out broomhandle mausers that Luke and Han were armed with in the earlier episodes.
