Someday it will have an 1892 front band, till then it has to be happy with an 1896 band.

in the process with an 1898

when finished I was happy with the 1892 the 1898 was a different story, I failed, the match is not good, I got stymied by the yellowish walnut. The rplacement forestock is a nice one, too, but it is too dark on the finished rifle, no matter, it will be my rifle and I will live with it the way it is

That looks like a model 1898/1902 hand-guard worthy of 'sight-opening' restoration.
