Title: A Request for measurements
Post by Jason60chev on Dec 17th, 2018 at 3:51pm
Hello Krag Friends,

I am away from home and my things and I need some measurements, please:

1) Distance from end of muzzle to front of Front Sight base on 22" barrel
2) thickness of Cross guard on Krag Bayonet at the barrel ring
3) Distance from guard to front of bayonet lug when bayo is attached to rifle.....Or from guard to the forward most point of the bayonet lug slot.

Perhaps is a tape measure could be laid next to these areas and provide clear square on photos?

I would appreciate it.

Question #1 - distance from muzzle to front-sight base 22" barrel.

Answer - 13/32" or .40625 inch.

(Measured on 22" carbine barrel - from muzzle to 'front flare' of base).

note: photo distorts scale alignment with base. Actual measurement is 6.5/16" or 13/32" (.40625").

FWIW - I repeated measuring process using a vernier-caliper.

On the carbine barrel, my measurement readings varied, between .406" to .410", from muzzle to front 'lip' of flared sight base. (Readings varied about the thickness of a sheet of copier paper).

Repeating the process on a full-length rifle barrel, the measurement was consistently .425 inches from muzzle crown to front 'lip' of sight base.

Question #2:

My bayonet's guard is .280" thick at the 'muzzle-ring'.

BTW - Inside Diameter of this bayonet's muzzle-ring seems to measure about .615", but, I have trouble getting consistent measurements on Krag bayonet 'muzzle-rings'. (Are they tapered or out of round)???

Regardless, this bayonet fits well on five Krag rifles.

Oddly, I measured a rifle barrel, just now, at .618" muzzle diameter. Yet, this bayonet fits quite nicely.

Question #3 - 'kind of sort of' an answer.

Using the bayonet lug or bayonet slot as a point of reference is vague, difficult to measure, and creates a lot of variables.

Maybe there is a better way:

IMHO - Better reference points are the straight edge of the front barrel band, the back edge of the bayonet-guard, and the barrel's muzzle-crown.

The distance from the front edge of the forward barrel-band to the back edge of the bayonet's 'barrel-ring' is 2.825".

The distance from the front edge of the forward barrel-band to the muzzle-crown is 3.20".
