I can not read the number, with certainty, on your second Krag. The picture quality is too poor.

If the number is 28823, drop everything and immediately go out and buy a 'Super Lotto' ticket!

FWIW - #28823 is also in SRS data: "model 1896 carbine, 06/14/1900, 9th Cav., turned in".
The 9th Cavalry was a famous Black regiment.

(Only a small percentage of the almost 1/2 million U. S. Krag serial numbers were found in official documents, by Frank Mallory and others, who were working on the data collection).

Please confirm the serial number and post some better quality photographs. (Clear close-ups of front-sight/muzzle area, rear-sight/top & side views, stock forearm and wrist area, any metal or wood markings).

BTW - Your first Krag appears to be a model 1896 carbine that had its Stock updated to the longer 1899 style, during an armory rebuild.

Some civilian altered the replacement stock by adding a pistol grip and 'tossed' the carbine rear-sight and hand-guard.
This Krag carbine retains its late style carbine barrel-band and band retaining-spring.

The 'long forearm' 1899 style replacement stock for the model 1896 carbine dispensed with the saddle ring & bar.
