I very often join a forum when I come up with something I can't pin myself. I am a dealer that works with good ole stuff and have quite a bit of experience with Krag rifles.

This one has 99 Krag Carbine features on a 96 action.

There are no car-touches with exception to the small number behind the trigger guard.

Any thoughts on this rifle?

replacement forestock/did you look under the barrel band?

Is there bluing on the receiver? Looks like it in the photos.

How long is the barrel? Kind looks like a made up rifle to me. I will b e very happy if I am completely wrong on that.

Your Krag looks to be a parts gun put together by party unknown. Your wood and metal appears refinished.

The only model 1899 carbine part is the sight-protecting hand-guard, (which could be a reproduction part). Your model 1901 rear-sight is a rifle sight.

A close and clear picture of your front-sight base might help reveal if your barrel is a real carbine barrel. Krag carbine barrels measure exactly 22 inches from muzzle to closed bolt-face.

I cannot read the worn serial number on your receiver. It appears to be in the 78XXX range. There are a lot of model 1896 cavalry carbines and some rifles in that range. It is possible you have a model 1896 cavalry carbine that someone has 'blued' and put in an incorrect & cut-down stock.

Old Arms, I am curious as to what features you assign specifically to the 1899 carbine? Only a receiver marked "Model 1899" can be a true 1899 carbine.

It looks nice and might be a great shooter if the bore is good. Have you had a chance to examine the bore?

From one picture, even the front site blade looks reblued.

Hmmmm. Looks similar to the Krag that appears in some of the photos of Clyde Barrow.

A good read on the five digit serial number might provide a match with SRS documented serial numbers.

I would like to see a clear picture of the right-side of the stock in the bolt handle recess area and the barrel at the muzzle-crown/front-sight area.

This looks like it could have been a model 1896 carbine that got made into a weird composite by Stokes Kirk or 'anyone'.

'Suredan', FWIW: The Krag in the Bonnie and Clyde photos has a model 1896 sight and a different type of 'humped' hand-guard. The front barrel-band is moved even further rearward on Clyde's Krag.

I have a bunch of parts and will be building a similar "School" rifle, just because I like the short length and the full stock. Sure, it won;t be correct, but it will be a fun project.

I have had many hours of enjoyment from 'rescue guns' and 'shooter projects'.

I have no beef with fun project 'parts-Krags', as long as, they don't get passed off as something rare and legitimate, someday.

The only defense against an unscrupulous vendor is knowledge.

My Honor and Integrity forbid me from doing such a thing. But, except for notes/description I leave with the rifle after my passing, I cannot guarantee others will not in the future.

I learned early with guns, "Buyer Beware",  that a lot of responsibility was on the shoulders of the buyer to educate himself.

I also learned to treat fellow collectors ethically. I had a lot of good role models.

Has the OP ever been back? I was truly interested in knowing if the forestock was spliced. I would like this rifle a whole lot more if it did not have the carbine handguard. He said "let me know if you have any questions", I do.
