I use to have a pre-WW1 Mannlicher-Schoenauer carbine in 6.5X54mm M-S.

With its 'spool' magazine and bolt-handle attached at the mid-point of the bolt, it was 'smooth as silk' to operate.

Funny thing .... it relied on that long, 160 grain, round nosed projectile for effortless feed.
Reloads, with 139 grain spitzer bullets, would hopelessly 'hang-up' when the case-shoulder failed to clear a highly polished lobe in the feed-path.

The timing of the cartridge feed required the long 160 grain bullet nose to make contact with the feed ramp to angle the cartridge body over the lobe.

Some legendary actions can be very fussy regarding cartridge geometry.
