Title: My first owned Krag (Sporterized)
Post by spectrum on Jan 13th, 2019 at 10:45pm
So this seems like the right place. I was at my local gun show yesterday and picked up a Krag that had been sporterized. It's not badly done very interesting how they chose to mount the scope(Came with a 22Mag scope.)
But here are the photos of it and the sad holes drilled into it which sucks but such is life. Got it for $225, now if only I can get the one my dad keeps locked up.

'spectrum' - Welcome to the KCA Forum.

You should have a lot of fun 'Range Time' with your "new" Krag.

How is the bore condition?

Hint - Take your Dad out to the Range for a try out. That will probably get his Krag out of the cabinet!

Thank you, I was happy to find this place. Well I think I might end up with the collection. The last time he fired his Springfield was 03 or 04. But I imagine when he comes to visit next month I'll bring this out.

Bore looks immaculate. Though I will admit when I loaded some rounds to see if everything cycled properly I didn't know you could stop rounds from cycling. I was about to get mad until I toyed around and figured it out. But for a gun this old the bolt cycles so smooth it makes the bolt on my Savage seem clunky and old.

Looks like you lost a digit to a screw hole.

Soooooo.  How are ya set for ammo?  SAVE YER BRASS!

And the next logical bunch of questions are...  Bullets?  reloading dies? primers? powder?  Cannot forget powder now, can we?

Well I always picked up 30-40 whenever I saw it. I have a win95 that sadly was also sporterized(By my grandfather for my grandmother). I run 180gr. through that when I bring it out. I know it's the only gr. my dad puts through his Krag and 95. But I have not been keeping track of my spent brass. I need to change that but I haven't fired 30-40 in jeeze almost a year. But thank you for the links.

Nice looking sporter of a Model 1898 Krag Jorgensen. With a serial number of 428,77X you would be in the December 1902 approximate date of birth. There would only be about 50,000 more built after that, so it is a later one. Enjoy!!

Well your rifle is a beauty and I usually don't take a shine to sporterized Krags so it is high praise.

Take pics of the targets when you take it out to the range.  We want to see how it shoots. ::)

Thank you, I wish I knew more about this rifle in particular but all the seller knew about it was he picked it up at an estate sale with the Sporterized 1931 Mosin that was next to it. And he has had it for some years trying to sell them at shows. So all I can figure is it was meant to be.  8-)
But when I take it out I'll take some photo's. Don't know how far off the scope is as it's missing the caps so for all I know it's set for aiming into next week.

Your Krag's scope is off-set to the Left, so I offer these suggestions:

1. Remove the bolt and sight down the bore with the rifle in a stationary rest. (You can improvise a rest by cutting a couple of "V" notches in opposite ends of a cardboard box). Center the bore on a target at about 50 yards.

Adjust the scope's cross-hairs so they 'aim' about 1&1/2 inch to the left of where the bore is aimed.

2. Do your initial shooting of groups at 50 yards. Aim scope cross-hairs at center of Bull. Tolerate bullets grouping 1 to 1 1/2 inch to the right of the Point of Aim.

At 100 yards, aim cross-hairs at 9 o'clock and shots should be relatively centered on Bull.

By keeping things parallel, with POA slightly and consistantly to the left of Point of Impact, avoids the 'lines' intersecting at an angle and creating greater disparity at longer range.

Never seen a scope mounted quite so low and/or so far left. I would be interested in seeing pictures of the mount and base in various states of attachment.

Hi Spectrum,

It looks like the original rear sight screw holes are still available for use?

If your interested, here's a different option for mounting a scope to the top of your barrel.

The screw holes on the side of the receiver can be easily filled with set screws or by any other means you choose.

The setup I have is for a scout scope configuration with a long eye relief.

Yes Ned, the OP's scope pictures are confusing. I think he has Weaver 'Swing-Away Rings' on his mount and the scope is swung over to the Left.

My Weaver Rig has solid rings and the scope is more closely aligned with the centerline of the barrel.

Thank you all for the info on sighting in and as well some advice on possibly changing scope location. I think if I change scope location it would be after getting rid of the right handed stock in favor of something more traditional or heck maybe I'll find someone who wants to trade stocks down the line. Who knows. But the weaver stock and how it swings out allows me to use the Magazine feed cutoff and easy use of the safety when in the fire position. Because of those two things I'm really considering changing it up...But in anything that isn't range firing I'll be the only one firing it at this time.

That is certainly different thank you for the better look.
I see four holes drilled but loos like only two screws.
I wonder if a Weaver No. 2 base and side mount would fit the screw pattern? Maybe a Williams?
After another look the holes don't seem in a straight line so maybe not.

Odd use for a pivot mount base.

True it is really odd. But it does allow me to use the safety and magazine cut-off with no issues. Though I think I might go for what Local has on his or Butler's I like things centered. But it does give a strange unique quality to the rifle and in the Willamette valley and surrounding area's 100 yards is about what everybody does for max.

The additional photos make it clear that 'spectrum' has a Weaver top-mount base, (with pivot-rings), that has been improvised into a side-mount.

I wonder if the original 'user' aimed with his Left Eye, while shooting Right-Handed?

The off-set is much greater with this rig, than with the Weaver Side-Mounts, made for U.S. Krag receivers.

'Spectrum' is correct about the Ocular Lens Housing, of a regular side-mounted scope, interfering with operation of an unaltered Krag safety-lever. The cut-off lever, however, is not obstructed.

(IMHO - A Weaver No. 2 side-mount base will fit his hole spacing).

It is nteresting how the scope is rotated 90 degrees so that elevation knob becomes windage and windage knob becomes elevation.

I do that with all my scope mounted Krags, less interference for ejection

That link no longer works.  Just Google "Krag sight rails," and you will be able to find the new web site.

Thank you. Sorry I haven't been on. I've been busy with school and keeping grades up. But I haven't done much of anything with the Krag yet. I was looking at some places that might help in doing a new stock but I think I'll end up trimming it down myself so I can use it left handed and I'll check out that side now. I might see about getting a scout scope for it for the extended eye relief and just do that and find some screws to plug the existing holes, is my current plan.
