Title: My first krag
Post by Socks on May 5th, 2019 at 7:47pm
Got a carbine style bought and I need some info and parts. It doesn't have a butt plate on it. The butt hole is there as the holes for the cleaning stuff. The top hole and the inletted portion seem to be filled in. There is a small indention that appears to be where the top hole was. Just need to get the space out for the top of the plate. I need a butt plate and or need to know the size of the plate hoping that they didn't cut or sand it down to far. I will also have more questions as it goes along.

'Socks' - Welcome to the KCA Forum and congratulations on your first Krag.

Hey, watch your language!

(The correct term, for the cavities under the butt-plate, is 'lightening holes').  ;D

If you post some close-up photos of the butt-plate area, sights, forearm tip, and markings, members can tell you more about your Krag.

Butt Hole...  LOL That's what my wife sometimes calls me!  Does that mean I'm also a lightening hole?

Looking forward to some pictures too!

Oh... and by the way, Welcome to the Forum, and to the wonderful world of Krags!  Careful, they are highly addictive!

Oh Lord help me bit my tongue... This is a family oriented forum so I'm not going to say any puns about Baltimoreed's holey butt post. ;)

I will not malign the name of the almighty Krag and have it become the butt of many jokes. :D

Holy Colonoscopy!

'Baltimoreed', you can just open the "butt trap cap" to access or search the cavity. There is no need to remove the butt-plate.

(Suddenly, guns make me feel dirty).

The first person to suggest getting excited while inserting his tools and lubrication in the butt is going to be sentenced to an hour of bad sermons from Culpeper!!!   ;D

Hey "Socks", seriously, some pictures will help you get answers to some questions you haven't even thought to ask yet.

I'd say something cute, but it looks like its all been said.  ::)

A little minor levity for some major Krag aficionados!   :D

I'll mind my P's and Q's too!  ;)

Ok... now about those pictures...

I’ll try to behave too but life’s too short to be serious all the time. And this forum has more than it’s share of wise-acres. Must be the Krag, pull the trigger and you get a smile. Happiness is a warm Krag!

My middle name is "Craig". I'm thinking about getting it legally changed to "Krag".

'Baltimoreed', pull my trigger finger and you'll get a smile!

Well darn folks about my butt thing. So to clear that up I will try to get you all some pic's of my butt problem. I already know about a couple things wrong on it and I am going to get that straighten out. So take it easy on me as it is a soft subject as I know you all are aware of.  Having trouble posting the pictures. Please stand bye.

Well I got pictures but it wont let me load them. Too large and I will have to try and figure out how to do it. And that may take awhile.

'Socks' has Shoes! .... Ok, now I'll get serious ...

'Socks' - Your Krag, #257362, is a 'cut-down' U.S. model 1898 rifle that was built at Springfield Armory around March or April, 1900.

The barrel was shortened and is now wearing a 1903 Springfield front-sight. Your rear-sight is a Krag 1902 sight.

Your trigger-guard is homemade, possibly using an altered 1903-A3 Springfield 'stamped' sheet metal trigger-guard.
Your barrel-band is on backwards: the stamped "U" should be on the right-side of the arm.

Your Stock is made from Italian walnut. These stock blanks were utilized, mainly from 1899 to 1902, when there was a shortage of cured American black walnut blanks.
Your Stock has been shortened at both ends and heavily 'sanded'. The Butt end has been cut square and will no longer accept a standard U.S. Krag butt-plate. It is likely someone altered it to accept a rubber butt-pad.

IMHO - Your Krag is too altered to be a practical candidate for restoration.

If it were mine, I would fit a rubber butt pad, (maybe even using a 'slip-on' model).
I would replace the Trigger-guard with a real Krag guard.

I would enjoy the rifle as a practical basic 'sporter'.

Here’s a Krag/scout rifle that I built from a cut up sporter. It turned out nice. Very handy rifle. The forward Kraghaus scope mount uses the existing rear sight screw holes and one more that a gunsmith did for me. I used a Nikon IER [intermediate eye relief] scope. Didn’t work on my pistol but was perfect on my krag. Good luck on your project rifle.

Nice rifle. And thanks for the info. I do have a trigger guard coming I am really wanting to put a butt plate on it. but  I hate to buy  and then find out it wont fit. The top hole is there just covered up. Does any one have any measurements for the butt plate? Also a ? about the windage knob on the rear sight. Mine is very loose. Should it have like a click or some kind of spring set  it to keep it from moving? As is it is free floating.

'Socks' - The 1902 sight windage-knob simply turns. There are no 'clicks'. Often, the windage-screw is quite stiff from dried grease.

The 1898 Butt-Plate is not 'flat'; there is a recurve at the toe.

Some Butt-Plate photos:

Thanks That will help out. I did some research and found that a Springfield m03 B P is almost the same thing. So close that they sell them as replacement for Krag. So I am going to find a old 03 B P and go from there. will line up. I will have to try and bend the bottom flat. That may be the problem. And a little off the inside where the catch hits and it may? fit. I just don't want to screw up a good piece so I will use a old beat up B P .
I wonder how they kept the windage screw from getting moved off? Mine is so loose if anything touch's it it will ove. Maybe some blue lock tite?

Normally the eye-piece assembly is a good friction fit on the end of the leaf (fig.8a,B on fig.12a,D.) If yours isn't, disassemble and "squoosh" it a hair. (Drive out the tiny pin holding the windage knob to allow disassembly. If not handy with small tools, chances of mishap are high.)

Thank You  I will have to give that some thought before I work on it. That pin looks like it could fly off into never never land.

That's why we support the knob with a softwood block and drive the pin right into it.

FWIW: The windage threads are partially visible on the 1902 Krag sight.
In this case, I would just center the rear-sight blade and put a drop of Blue Lock-tite, gasket-seal, or 'rubbery' cement on the threads, (where visible), on each side of the leaf.
