Since reading Dr. W.G. Hudson's (1903) book, "Modern Rifle Shooting - from the American Perspective", I have wanted to put together a facsimile of an early 'Shooting Box' of the Krag era.

I've slowly assembled period looking items and accessories, that are useful and might legitimately form some of the contents of a Shooting Box or Bag.

Finding an inexpensive, but, credible looking case or leather bag has been my biggest hurdle.

A few days ago, I found a useful carry box, made from an old Remington 12 Gauge Shot-Shell crate. The paint job and rustic workmanship spoke to me!

My hunch is that this box once served some 'Sporting' purpose.

Now, I just have to fabricate an internal tray and refine the contents of my Krag 'Range Box'.

Dr. W.G. Hudson, in addition to being an active Civilian Shooter, was the 'Staff Doctor' for the Remington Arms Company.

His "Modern Rifle Shooting" book was sponsored by The Laflin & Rand Powder Company, which was a division of Remington from around 1900 to 1910.

Definitely the makings from a doctor. I have a couple old doctor's bags I have filled with all kinds of medical equipment when I was the doctor for camping trips for  our local Boy Scouts troop. I had it packed with all kinds of goodies I might possibly need for back woods adventures.

Dr. Hudson's "Shooting Bag" looks like a doctor's kit for shooting sports.

I especially like the bottle of gasoline to clean the barrel out of oil before shooting. Very handy!

Also, pictures of some matches fired at Seagirt, N.J. (some N.G. matches some National Matches) showing Krags, including some range bags and 'crap'.

Medical bags and compact cases are in evidence. It probably made Train Travel with your rifle more convenient.

Would a Lyman 310 tool fit in there?

I doubt 'Krag competitors' were reloading at their matches.

It does appear an array of chemicals was carried to wash fired Brass and rescue it from mercuric priming and corrosive propellants, for future use.

There was also bullet lubricant and a device to apply it. This was due to barrel deposit issues with early bullet jackets.

Some mighty volatile solvents were also carried to preserve precious barrel metal from nasty ammo!

I am glad we have benefited from the evolution and refinements of modern ammunition.

Not everything about the 'Good Old Days' was Good!

My favorite "Good Old Day" practice in the gun shop was the use of liquid mercury in the barrel to amalgamate with the lead deposits to clean the barrel out.

It works wonderfully but it's a great way to get a case of Mad Hatter's Disease!

I have a serious problem with little boxes and such to hold doodads.  This one is vintage, Krag related, and holds fun doodads.  Kyrptonite, I tell ya.
